Kenya and Russia Claim top Marks at Country Music Marathon

NASHVILLE, Tenn., (April 26, 2008) – Kenya’s Sylvester Chebii, 26, won the ninth annual Country Music Marathon today in a time of 2 hours, 14 minutes, 27 seconds. In the women’s race, Svetlana Ponomarenko, 38, from Russia outkicked defending champion Olena Shurkhno, 30, from the Ukraine, finishing in 2:30:33.

The rain, which dampened the pre-race morning, broke before the start gun fired to begin today’s race, yielding cool running temperatures for more than 30,000 runners and walkers.

A pack of ten elite men were first out on the 26.2-mile course today. Russian Mikhail Khobotov, 35, attempted to push the pace after the 10k mark, but the men appeared content to preserve a conservative pace. At the half-marathon mark the men were on a 2:17:00 marathon pace. Augustus Kavutu, 31, of Kenya placed the first surge into the race after mile 14 as the pack ran along the banks of the Cumberland River, dropping Sergey Yemilanov from Russia and Ethiopia’s Abebe Yimer.

The second surge came on the approach to mile 17 lead by Chebii and countryman Christopher Torotich, 27. The lead pack, which included 26-year-old Ketema Nigusse of Ethiopia and Kenyan Meshack Kosgei, 33, dropped the remaining men as the group ran the fastest mile of the race (4:53) through mile 19.

As the men exited Shelby Park towards the finish, outside LP Field, Nigusse faded and Chebii was mounting his final attack on his opponents.

“It was a tough race, but I felt confident I could win in the final miles,” said Chebii.

Ponomarenko’s steady pace decimated her counterparts in the women’s race from the first 5k to the finish line. By the 10k mark she controlled an 18 second lead. By the half-marathon, she was leading by more than a minute and once she broke the finish line tape, she was more than three minutes ahead of her closest competitor Shurkhno.

“It was a perfect day and I really took advantage of it,” said Ponomarenko through her interpreter and agent, Anbrey Baranov.

Ponomarenko ran unchallenged by her competitors and unchallenged by the course averaging a 5:40 per mile pace along her winning tour of Nashville.

Race Participation (information provided by race officials)

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon will celebrate 30 years on Sunday 6 July with a record number of entries expected from around the world, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh MP announced today.

Entries opened for the annual Queensland event at today's launch which was attended by the Premier, event sponsors and running luminaries including Rob de Castella and Pat Carroll.

Ms Bligh said the Gold Coast Airport Marathon was set to benefit from an increase in international participation this year. "We're looking to eclipse last year's 16,000 plus participants, helped in part by a growth from Japan and New Zealand," said Ms Bligh.

She said the event was a great injection for tourism in Queensland and also encouraged a healthy and active society. "It's a terrific starting point for Queenslanders who want to get fit.

"There is no better way to start than on a fast, flat and scenic course with tens of thousands of spectators, roving musicians and entertainers, motivating participants all the way to the finish line."

The Premier was also presented with the first pair of commemorative 30th year Gold Coast Airport Marathon ASICS running shoes.

"It is tremendous recognition that a global brand like ASICS has decided to commemorate the 30th Gold Coast Airport Marathon with its own shoe," said Ms Bligh.

"The shoe looks great with the distinctive blue and gold, and I'm sure we'll see thousands of pairs of them pounding the pavement on the first Sunday in July."

Gold Coast Airport Marathon Chairman Kerry Watson said a number of initiatives were set to take the event to the next level in 2008.

“We are pleased to offer the largest prizemoney pool of any accredited marathon event in Australia totalling $49,000, plus a new $10,000 bonus if the male winner runs under 2 hours 10 minutes and the female winner runs under 2 hours 30 minutes,” said Mr Watson.

“Another first for any marathon in Australia is the introduction of 5km split times in the full marathon live on our website, enabling family and friends of runners to monitor their progress through the race.”

Gold Coast Airport Chairman Jim Tolhurst said the growth of the Airport since its sponsorship commenced six years ago and the $100 million terminal expansion scheduled to begin later this year would enable the marathon to continue attracting more domestic and international visitors.

"The runway extension opened in mid 2007 has provided a gateway for direct flights to and from key markets, including Japan, New Zealand and Asia," said Mr Tolhurst.

"We will, for the second year in a row welcome a direct, intercontinental flight from Japan carrying a plane load of enthusiastic runners making the journey specifically to compete in the 2008 Gold Coast Airport Marathon."

Gold Coast Mayor Ron Clarke MBE said he has seen the event grow from 124 runners in 1979 to being a massive tourism-generating event on the Gold Coast.

"It is the largest community sporting event held each year on the Gold Coast, and a great showcase for event tourism," said Cr Clarke.

"Runners and walkers can enjoy one of the most picturesque courses in the world. Add an extraordinary level of community involvement, fabulous weather and a great family atmosphere, and the result is an outstanding event that not only is a lot of fun, but one that also brings a huge benefit to our local economy."

The 2008 Gold Coast Airport Marathon on Sunday 6 July will feature an event for everyone - Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K Run, 7.5K Walk and Junior Dash.

The official charities are Diabetes Australia - Queensland, and The Cancer Council - Queensland.

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is organised by Queensland Events Gold Coast which is a major event management company wholly owned by the Queensland Government through Queensland Events Corporation.

About This Site

Chronicles Logo The marathon chronicle follows our travel and running adventures as we work our various ways to marathons all over the world. See a discussion of this here. I use the term "adventures" advisedly, with special joy and fear in my voice. We have had some interesting times both on and off the course.

Directory LogoThen be sure to look at our marathon directory. That is just what it sounds like. We gather as much basic information as we can about every international marathon that is willing to provide it to us. We include photographs of the courses when we can, as well as links and contact information.

Travel LogoWhen you begin thinking about going, check out our travel store. We look for airfares and hotel deals that match marathons around the world and let you know when we find an exceptional deal. There is nothing worse than being all trained up with no where to run. We seek to solve that for you.

Store LogoAnd finally, through our affiliation with Amazon.com, we sort out literature about our various destination events, about running and we also look for special deals on running clothing, accessories and shoes.

What we don't do is: a) Hand out training advise (If you don't already know, you are in the wrong place), b) Hand out medical advise (you need a sports med doctor for that), and c) screen locations and events to match your needs. You are totally responsible for understanding the risks involved in traveling to certain parts of the world and making your own decisions about your ability to handle those risks. Because we list an event, does not in any way imply that it is a good or safe choice for you.(rs)
