The Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile

Napoleon I conceived of this monument as a tribute to the soldiers of his Grande Armée after 128 victorious battles. Measuring more than 160 feet in height, it is the worlds largest triumphal arch. It is located at the center of a circle with 12 spokes, grand avenues extending out across the city. The most famous of which is the Champs Élysées, one of the worlds most elegant shopping streets. It also provides the backdrop for the start of the Paris Marathon. A tunnel bypasses the hectic traffic, providing access to an elevator which will carry you up to the top. Down at street level you will find the tomb of France's Unknown Soldier.
