Race Day: 1st Water Stop

The red line on the map marks the course around the five and six kilometer points. Green circles (Friends and Family) identify the location of subway stations along the route. Place the mouse pointer over the circle to display the name of the station. Click on the name to view information on trains that are appropriate for those interested in following the progress of their runners across the course. Blue circles (Video Segments) mark the location at which the video segments listed in the viewer on this page were produced. Purple squares (Points of Interest) identify locations, buildings and monuments of historical or practical interest.

Running Surface

The road surface around the Bastille Monument is slick when wet. Add orange peels, banana peels and water from dropped water bottles... New to this mix in the last couple of years is the proliferation of packs of GU, Power Gel, You-Name-It, that were not completely emptied until ten or twenty people have stepped on them. This is the case in a growing majority of large races today. Soon, race officials will have to start hosing down the roads during the race. I don't know of a better solution. You have to take the gels with water. You can't separate them. (rs)

Return Trip Refreshments

You will be back to this spot in a while. This refreshment station serves the dual purpose of supporting runners as they return after looping around the Bois de Vincennes. That makes it a good spot for friends who are uncomfortable using the subway to race from spot to spot. That is especially true if their runner is fast. The subway stop is under the new Paris Opera.
