Tuileries Gardens

Once the site of Tuileries Palace, these formal gardens are an urban oasis where children ride on carousels, lovers meet, businessmen make deals and poets write. The Palace was built by Catherine De Medici's. It served other royal families up to the revolution, then served as a prison for Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette until they were marched a few short steps to the guillotine located nearby at what is now Place de la Concord. In 1871, it was sacked and burned. With that, it was removed to allow for expansion of the current gardens. At left, an early spring afternoon in the gardens looking northwest past Concorde with the Arc de Triomphe in the distance.
