Place de la ConcordAs the largest public square in Paris, it was chosen in 1754 for a monument to then King, Louis XV. Thirty years later, during the French Revolution, that was torn down and this space became the focal point for the bloodiest period in the countries' history. More than 1300 people met their end by way of the Guillotine which was placed at its center. Robes Pierre, Louis XVI, and Marie Antoinette were beheaded here before cheering crowds. Since then, the location has gone through many changes, settling, in 1833, into its' current role framing the 3,300 year old Obelisk of Luxor. This 230 ton, 75 foot high monolith was a donation to the people of France from the Viceroy of Egypt. |
